When in a time crunch after a busy day, there’s no way you’ll want to make a home-cooked meal that will take hours to prepare. You look for alternatives that will feed a family (or just yourself) and take little to no time to cook. Costco is a gem for many food items, but they also have an array of pre-made meals that are ready to take home and simply warm up. Take a look at these Costco pre-made meals that you’ll be sure to enjoy quickly and easily.

1. Kirkland Signature Chicken Tacos

I love a DIY kit, and this taco platter is just that. Enjoy an easy-to-ensemble taco full of taco-seasoned grilled chicken, shredded cheese, coleslaw, salsa, cilantro lime sauce, and sliced fresh lime that you can load onto soft tortillas. The flavors of each item are there, they’re not overpowering. However, they make a nice mixture of ingredients for a taco when they’re together. I’ve had better tacos, I won’t lie, and I will most likely add a little more pizazz to the meal (like some fresh avocado), but for a quick, easy Costco pre-made meal, this one does the job.

2. Yakisoba Stir-Fry with Seasoned Chicken

With crisp, fresh vegetables, a heaping mound of noodles, and a hefty amount of seasoned chicken, this meal checks all the dinner boxes. We’ve got flavor, we’ve got nutrients, and we’ve got satisfying. It’s so simple to make; just dump all of the ingredients into a wok or saucepan and let it cook. The Costco pre-made meal also comes with stir-fry sauce to mix in, which gives all the flavors of Asian flare. There’s so much food, so you’ll be happy to keep these as leftovers throughout the week.

3. Enchilada Bake with Rotisserie Chicken

First things first, if you’ve never tried Costco’s rotisserie chicken on its own, then I highly suggest grabbing one. It is tender, moist, and full of flavor. With that being said, this easy enchilada bake has their rotisserie chicken in it, and that’s one of the many reasons I love this meal. You can stick the whole thing into the oven, which makes for no mess and tons of convenience. However, it’s important to note that this bake contains enchilada flavors and ingredients such as tortillas, sauce, veggies, cheese, and beans, but it is cooked and served more like a casserole.

4. Chicken Pot Pie

Chicken pot pie is a comfort meal for me. It feels cozy every time I eat it, which is why I love this Costco pre-made meal. If you’ve ever baked a pie you know how simple it is to stick in the oven and cook. Since it’s a giant and packed pie, this dinner is great to serve for a family. It also makes cleanup very easy. It’s flaky, salty, and full of chicken. But an FYI, you may want to add a little more gravy to keep the dough moist.

5. Gyro Meal Kit

Costco’s pre-made meals are presented in a lot of different international cuisines, and Greek food makes itself known in the retail company’s Gyro kit. Enjoy Mediterranean cuisine as this other DIY kit is full of gyro wraps, lamb or beef, tzatziki sauce, feta cheese, and a combo bowl of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions. While the meat is already cooked, you can warm it up as you please. While the wraps are on the smaller side, you get a lot of protein to stack, meaning you’ll get a good meal in for the week.

16 Non-Alcoholic Drinks for Dry January That Don’t Actually Suck https://cleanplates.com/top-picks/non-alcoholic-drinks/ Fri, 22 Dec 2023 16:57:46 +0000 https://cleanplates.com/?p=35608 Six months ago, I decided to stop drinking. Six months ago, I decided to stop drinking. I made the decision for my health and well-being, and after six months of not choosing to pour myself a glass of wine at the end of each day, I found many aspects of my life immensely improved. I sleep better, I’m clear-minded, my skin is clear, and I am honestly just happier. But of course, our culture favors drinking alcohol — especially during special events, like birthdays or holidays. So what does a non-drinker do in those times of need? They look for non-alcoholic drinks so they have something to sip on with everyone else. Because club soda honestly gets a little boring after a while…

Thankfully, we are certainly in an age where not drinking is becoming more and more favored. According to Statista, the non-alcoholic drinks market is now worth $447.4 billion and is expected to grow over 5% in the next five years. There are hundreds of non-alcoholic drinks out there to choose from now thanks to the booming interest.

But…are they even any good? With a particular desire to find the best of the best, I put my taste buds to the test to determine the best-tasting non-alcoholic drinks on the market right now. I tried a series of non-alcoholic wines, beers, sparkling beverages, spirits, apertifs, and some drinks that aren’t exactly claiming to be “alternatives” at all. After tasting a lot of rather bad takes on non-alcoholic drinks, I was able to determine 16 that I would deem worthy of purchasing.

So if you are looking to quit, or you’re simply in need of a few beverage ideas to get you through Dry January, here are my favorite non-alcoholic drinks to buy that don’t actually suck.

1. Thomson & Scott – Noughty Alcohol-Free Sparkling Rosé

In my opinion, the best non-alcoholic wines are the ones where alcohol was removed from a previously fermented wine. These wines are typically labeled with “alcohol removed” or “dealcoholized” such as this one. This rosé tastes just like the real thing with a perfect balance of dry and sweet with every delicious sip. If you’re more of a traditional sparkling wine drinker, their Sparkling Chardonnay is also a particular favorite of mine.

Buy now: Thomson & Scott – Noughty Alcohol-Free Sparkling Rosé

2. Hop Water Blood Orange

This is your perfect mix of a hard seltzer and a beer — but without the alcohol, of course. Hop Water gives this sparkling beverage an extra hoppy finish versus just cracking open sparkling water. Blood Orange is my personal favorite, but the Mango comes in a very close second.

Buy now: Hop Water Blood Orange

3. Leitz x Boisson – Blanc

One of my current favorite non-alcoholic whites is a recent release for Boisson — one of the main stores that sell non-alcoholic drinks both in-store and online — the Blanc is the perfect alternative if you’re looking for a crispy Sauvignon Blanc.

Buy now: Leitz x Boisson – Blanc

4. Lyre’s Classico

For a sparkling prosecco, the Lyre’s Classico comes in either a bottle or a set of individual cans. This crispy sparkling beverage is light and makes for a classy drink if others are enjoying a glass of bubbly around you.

Buy now: Lyre’s Classico

5. Jøyus – Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Wine

Another delicious non-alcoholic sparkling wine is Jøyus, a crisp beverage with notes of green apple, pear, and melon. It’s so light and refreshing, you may find yourself drinking through the entire bottle in just one go.

Buy now: Jøyus – Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Wine

6. Thomson & Scott – Noughty Alcohol-Free Rouge

I do admit that I haven’t found many alcohol-free red wines that I’ve enjoyed yet, but Rouge is certainly up there for me. It has the body and taste of a Syrah without the usual vinegar-y bite, and pairs well with comforting dishes like bowls of pasta or a hearty casserole.

Buy now: Thomson & Scott – Noughty Alcohol-Free Rouge

7. Domaine Dupont – Jus De Pomme Pétillant (Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Cider)

If you’re more prone to drinking sweet hard ciders, this sparkling cider is about to be your new favorite. It comes in a traditional 750 milliliter bottle to share, or you can enjoy one on your own with their smaller 330 milliliter bottles. But be wary — this sparkling cider is sweet and full of sugar, so sip it slowly.

Buy now: Domaine Dupont – Jus De Pomme Pétillant

8. Buzzkill Wines

Want something fun to drink while everyone cracks open a can during happy hour? Buzzkill Wines is my usual go-to. This canned non-alcoholic sauvignon blanc is certainly one of the best on the market right now and is surprisingly low in sugar.

Buy now: Buzzkill Wines

9. Surely Non-Alcoholic Bubbly Red Wine

If you’re more of a red drinker, Surely recently released a non-alcoholic bubbly red wine in cans that you can also crack open with everyone else. But don’t expect this beverage to taste just like red wine; this non-alcoholic drink has a unique flavor that makes it stand out compared to simply trying to blend in as just another alcohol-free red wine.

Buy now: Surely Non-Alcoholic Bubbly Red Wine

10. Seedlip Garden 108

While some people enjoy the typical liquor alternatives (like an alcohol-free whiskey or tequila), Seedlip’s mission is to create something completely new. Their line of non-alcoholic spirits are completely unique, and one of the best is the Seedlip Garden 108. It pairs splendidly with any mocktail that has some kind of herby element.

Buy now: Seedlip Garden 108

11. Mocktail Club – Havanna Twist

Don’t feel like mixing up a mocktail? Mocktail Club does it for you with its delicious line of non-alcoholic drinks. The Havanna Twist is one of their best — a refreshing beverage made with cucumber, lime, mint, and cardamom. But honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of their canned mocktails; the Bombay Fire is also outstanding.

Buy now: Mocktail Club – Havanna Twist

12. Athletic Brewing – Run Wild IPA

Athletic Brewing is spearheading the non-alcoholic beer industry, and there’s a reason for it — their product is surely the best on the market right now. Their line of beers taste eerily similar to the real thing, and they always satisfy my craving for an IPA when I’m digging into a greasy cheeseburger.

Buy now: Athletic Brewing – Run Wild IPA

13. De Soi Champignon Dreams

If you’re looking for something completely unique, De Soi is a line of non-alcoholic aperitifs made with natural adaptogens, founded by Katy Perry (yes, that Katy Perry!) and Morgan McLachlan. Champignon Dreams is the perfect combination of bitter and sweet with notes of strawberry and grapefruit and can either be served in a bottle or individual cans.

Buy now: De Soi Champignon Dreams

14. Caleño Non-Alcoholic Spirit – Light & Zesty

While I’m not the biggest fan of non-alcoholic spirits (maybe I’ll grow into it), I am a major fan of Caleño’s products — specifically their Light & Zesty. It’s meant to be a gin alternative but it tastes so much more than that, with the perfect mix of lime and tropical florals. You can always mix it into a mocktail, but honestly, I enjoy sipping on it straight on ice with a lime.

Buy now: Caleño Non-Alcoholic Spirit – Light & Zesty

15. Dogfish Head Lemon Quest

Many different brands have added a non-alcoholic beer to their line of offerings, which I am grateful for every time I go to a bar and at least one is offered on the menu. But if I had to choose one to actually buy to enjoy at home, Dogfish Head’s Lemon Quest is certainly up there. It has the taste of a light summer beer with a punch of lemon that is refreshingly tasty when I want to crack open something at the end of the day.

Buy now: Dogfish Head Lemon Quest

16. Betty Buzz Mixers

Looking to mix up a drink, but don’t know where to start? Famous actress Blake Lively has been there, especially since she doesn’t drink and is always looking for a tasty mocktail to sip on instead. Betty Buzz was founded for that reason, to provide a tasty drink to mix together when you’re not sure what to make. Mix together one of these non-alcoholic drinks with a spirit-free alternative for an easy, breezy mocktail that took no effort at all.

Buy now: Betty Buzz Mixers

As food and health editors, we have the privilege of being able to test all kinds of new delicious products in the grocery market. While there are the occasional groceries that didn’t exactly make the cut for our own pantries, every now and then, we taste a product that we can’t help but wonder how we ever survived without it. Between healthy snacks to stock up on or frozen meals to have on hand when you need something in a pinch, we’ve discovered quite a few grocery products this year that we feel deserve to be considered the best-of-the-best. Whether they were released in 2023 or within the past few years, these are the items we loved this year — and are absolutely worth making room for in your pantry and fridge.

Deep Indian Chicken Biryani

I’m a big fan of pretty much all of Deep Indian Kitchen’s frozen food lineup, but their recent release of the Chicken Biryani is worth highlighting. That spicy yogurt sauce paired with the saffron rice? It’s a lunch made in heaven. Truly.

Buy now: Deep Indian Chicken Biryani

SeaPack Dynamite Shrimp

I’m still beyond shocked how this shrimp quite literally tasted like dynamite. The texture is perfectly crispy, tossed with that tangy orange sauce, it’s my new favorite thing to throw in the oven for a quick lunch at home. I’ll pair it with a side salad and lunch is served in just minutes!

Buy now: SeaPack Dynamite Shrimp

Taylor Farms Pizza Ranch Mini Chopped Salad Kit

Speaking of a side salad, I’m currently in love with these mini chopped salad kits from Taylor Farms. A perfect serving for one, they make it easy to add a protein and have lunch ready without having to assemble a salad…or eat a soggy salad that you prepped at the beginning of the day. The Pizza Ranch is my particular favorite; still can’t believe how tasty that dressing is.

Buy now: Taylor Farms Pizza Ranch Mini Chopped Salad Kit

Lucesca Toscana Olive Oil

High quality olive oil makes all the difference when it comes to cooking, or even dressing salads, and this is by far my new favorite. I promise you, once you try this Lucesca Toscana has family-made extra virgin olive oil, you likely aren’t going to want to buy that cheap discount olive oil never again.

Buy now: Lucesca Toscana Olive Oil

Country Archer Rosemary Mini Jerky Sticks

When I’m traveling, I tend to stash a few extra snacks to have on hand, and this snack-size rosemary jerky now has a permanent spot in my purse. They’re small enough for stashing, and tasty and filling enough when you need something on-the-go.

Buy now: Country Archer Rosemary Mini Jerky Sticks

Honey Smoked Salmon Stackers

Growing up, I was always a sucker for a Lunchable. If I found one of those in my lunchbox during the school day, it turned into the best day ever no matter what. So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered Honey Smoked Salmon’s Stackables this year; it’s got that snacking, “lunchable” feel with a touch of class. Smoked salmon, herbed cream cheese, and crunchy crackers? Sign me UP.

Buy now: Honey Smoked Salmon Stackers

Sweet Loren’s Fudgy Brownie Gluten-Free Pre-Cut Cookie Dough

While I love to make cookies from scratch, having to make so many at once just isn’t plausible when I just want one or two at a time. I’ve been in the habit of stocking up on Sweet Loren’s cookie dough this year, popping one or two in the oven when I want a dessert with minimal effort. They’re fudgy and delicious, and the exact touch of chocolate sweetness I crave at the end of the day! Perfect to pair with a cup of tea, too.

Buy now: Sweet Loren’s Fudgy Brownie Gluten-Free Pre-Cut Cookie Dough

Daring Fly By Jing Chicken Bowls

I’m pretty much a sucker for anything with chili crisp on it, so a frozen dinner made by Fly By Jing (one of the best makers of chili crisp on the mass market) made with plant-based chicken from Daring? Yep. It’s a staple in my freezer now.

Buy now: Daring Fly By Jing Chicken Bowls

Genio Frozen Pizza Bianca

This is by far the best frozen pizza I’ve ever had. The crust is *chef’s kiss* perfect; it tastes like it just came from an artisanal pizza spot, without the effort of having to book a flight to Italy. Highly recommend.

Buy now: Genio Frozen Pizza Bianca

Brazi Bites Blueberry Waffles

Frozen waffles are great staples to have on hand when you’re looking for a quick breakfast with minimal effort, and these Brazi Bite’s blueberry waffles always seem to hit the spot. Not only are they delicious with a hot cup of coffee in the morning (especially after a grueling workout), but they are full of good-for-you ingredients that leave me feeling satisfied instead of hungry for more.

Buy now: Brazi Bites Blueberry Waffles

Kevin’s Natural Foods Korean BBQ-Style Beef

When I have no idea what I want to cook for dinner, I turn to Kevin’s Natural Foods. Often. The entrees and the sauces make throwing dinner together a mindless, simple task, and they are so good every time. While I would say the entire catalog of Kevin’s Natural Foods is delicious, the Korean BBQ-Style Beef is currently a favorite; delicious when paired with a fried rice using up all of those leftover veggies in your fridge.

Buy now: Kevin’s Natural Foods Korean BBQ-Style Beef

London Fog Clevr Superlatte Mix

Clevr’s healthy SuperLattes have always been a favorite cozy beverage for me in the afternoon. They give you that boost of energy and nutrition, and also taste absolutely delicious. Their newest flavor, London Fog, is perfect for any lovers of creamy black tea beverages.

Buy now: London Fog Clevr Superlatte Mix

Boisson Sips Small Batch Mixer Blackberry & Sage

Sometimes I’m not in the mood for an alcoholic beverage at the end of the day, so I like having a bottle of Boisson Sips small batch on hand for when I want something fancy without the booze. Simply pair a small amount with a sparkling water of your choice, and voila! A delicious mocktail without having to make it yourself. Prefer the booze? Don’t worry, it’s still great with a sparkling wine, wink wink.

Buy now: Boisson Sips Small Batch Mixer Blackberry & Sage

Fromager d’Affinois Garlic & Herbs

Not only was I pumped to find out that Fromager d’Affinois soft cheeses are lactose free, but they are the perfect cheese to grab when you need to put together a cheeseboard. The Garlic & Herbs is a particular favorite flavor for my grazing boards, pairing well with savory or sweet crackers.

Buy now: Fromager d’Affinois Garlic & Herbs

California Olive Ranch Roasted Garlic Sauce

California Olive Ranch released a line of marinara sauces this year, and while all of them are quite tasty, I have to say the Roasted Garlic is definitely my favorite. The garlic isn’t too overpowering; it has just enough. This sauce works well for pasta of course, but it’s also great for making homemade pizza!

Buy now: California Olive Ranch Roasted Garlic Sauce

Barilla Chickpea Orzo

I’m a big fan of chickpea pasta, so when Barilla gave me the chance to try their chickpea orzo, I was hooked. This orzo is almost creamy when cooked, and makes for an excellent alternative if you want a risotto, or even in your salad if you’re not a fain of quinoa but you want some kind of high-protein grain.

Buy now: Barilla Chickpea Orzo

Egglife Sweet Cinnamon Wraps

Yes, these wraps are made from eggs, but you can’t even tell. They are tasty, filling, and extremely versatile for all of your breakfasting, lunching, or snacking needs. I particularly love the Sweet Cinnamon wraps, which I love to pair with peanut butter, fresh sliced fruit (like banana, apples, or strawberries), and either some granola or a few chocolate chips. Because why not!

Buy now: Egglife Sweet Cinnamon Wraps

Mary’s Gone Crackers Kookies – Honey

I admit, I do get a bit of a sweet tooth in the afternoon, so having something to much on that satisfies that craving is a must — and these little cracker “kookies” do the job. Enjoyed on their own or even dipped in peanut butter or a sweet cottage cheese or ricotta dip, they are the bomb.

Buy now: Mary’s Gone Crackers Kookies – Honey

Lovebird Cinnamon O’s

This crunchy grain-free cereal is a great gluten-free breakfast option. With minimal added sugar, it is just the right amount of sweet.

Buy now: Lovebird Cinnamon O’s

Grocery bills aren’t getting any less expensive. It seems like a trip to the local grocer now sends most into sticker shock. Stores like Costco and Aldi are great alternatives when you want to get the best bang for your buck, but do not sleep on Trader Joe’s when it comes to affordable groceries.

If you’re looking for healthy foods that have a longer shelf life (because they’re frozen!), Trader Joe’s cannot be beat. Here are some of the best Trader Joe’s frozen foods under $5 to keep your bank account intact.

1. Cedar Wrapped BBQ Sockeye Salmon Filet

Trader Joe’s Cedar Wrapped BBQ Sockeye Salmon Fillet is a frozen salmon (wild caught sockeye) filet that’s rubbed with several smoky and spicy BBQ seasonings, including smoked sea salt and chipotle powder. The cedar wrapping also helps keep the salmon moist after being cooked. It’s gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, and dairy free. Baked or grilled, this tasty dish packs a huge punch of protein (32 grams for one filet!) at just 160 calories. While price for the salmon may vary based on weight, 6 ounces of salmon will cost around $4.99.

2. Organic Açai Bowl

Trader Joe’s Organic Açaí Bowl ($3.99) is a refreshing, non-GMO snack or breakfast meal filled with açaí berries, fruits, and granola. With a quick defrosting these bowls will be ready to eat in no time for a fortifying start to the day.

3. Quinoa Cowboy Veggie Burgers

For those looking for a smoky, southwestern dinner, Trader Joe’s Quinoa Cowboy Veggie Burgers ($3.99/12 ounces) are a great option. With only 180 calories per patty and 5 grams of protein, plus vitamin D, calcium, and iron, this frozen burger alternative is nutritious and filling.

4. Riced Cauliflower Stir Fry

A substantial alternative to standard rice or pasta would be the frozen riced cauliflower stir fry from Trader Joe’s. This gluten-free frozen dish — similar in texture to couscous — is made with cauliflower crumbles, tamari sauce, and sesame oil. The stir-fry also contains green peas, red bell peppers, grilled corn, and spring onions for a fresh flavor that dazzles in color, even when warmed up from frozen. At just 50 calories per cup, this frozen meal will only run you $3.79 for a 16 ounce bag at the check-out line.

5. Mexican-Style Riced Cauliflower

Trader Joe’s Mexican-Style Riced Cauliflower is a significant, frozen and low-carb option that will still keep you full until your next meal. Seasoned with cumin, cayenne, and lime, this dish is high in fiber, B vitamins, and vitamin C. Add some shrimp, chicken, or extra vegetables to make this protein-filled snack that will only run you $3.79 for a 16 punch bag.

We may primarily associate Costco with massive stacks of toilet paper and 40-pound bags of dog food, but this store is actually full of surprises: hidden among the monster packs of laundry detergent, you can find tasty, tasteful gifts for everyone in your life — at a surprisingly great price point. Each of these selections is a healthy choice for the nutrition buff in your life, readily available on the shelves of your local Costco. Prices and availability may vary among locations.

1. TRE Olive Calabrian Gift Box

The packaging of this gift is beyond beautiful, and that’s nothing compared to the contents: two half-liter tins of high-quality extra virgin olive oil, plus four spreads: an olive tapenade, pesto Genovese, bruschetta Calabrese, and Calabrian chili pepper. This is a beautiful gift that will last long past the holidays — and a great introduction to a brand that does some cool stuff (like letting you adopt your own olive tree).

(TRE Olive Calabrian Gift Box; $69.99)

2. Sonoma Creamery Pepper Jack Crisps

These Keto-friendly, gluten-free crisps are little protein powerhouses — and they’re delicious, too. The pepper jack and 10-month-aged parmesan cheeses offer real cheese flavor with a spicy kick, and they’re made with rBST-free cheese, so you can feel good about them being artificial hormone-free. This is a great, small present that can be easily dressed up with a little tissue paper and a holiday gift bag.

(Sonoma Creamery Pepper Jack Crisps; 10 oz, $8.99)

3. Vacaville Fruit Company Dried Fruit and Nut Wooden Gift Tray

This is, honestly, a visually stunning gift, as well as a healthful one: a dried fruit flower is nestled on top of an array of fruits and nuts, including pistachios, almonds, dates, and peaches. Arranged on a reusable, handmade wooden tray, this is the gift that keeps giving — when the fruit and nuts run out, your recipients can use this for entertaining (or just around the house). This gift is certified Kosher, too.

(Vacaville Fruit Company Dried Fruit & Nut Wooden Gift Tray; 56 oz, $42.99)

4. Kirkland Signature Unsalted Fancy Mixed Nuts

OK, so you’ll definitely need to dress this bag up a bit (it’s another gift bag item) but there’s no denying that these nuts are a stunning value at just $18. A combination of cashews, almonds, pistachios, and pecans, they’re all prepared and packaged in the U.S. This is an excellent no-sodium selection, which is great for those struggling with high blood pressure.

(Kirkland Signature Unsalted Fancy Mixed Nuts; $18.69,  40 oz. bag)

5. Wine Advent Calendar 24 Imported Half Bottle Variety

OK, this one is pretty spendy, but it’s also a really fun present, and a great gift for anyone (or any couple) who loves wine. This collection offers an interesting, international collection of 24 wines, and we love that they’re half-bottles, which means they pour just 2.5 glasses. It’s a great way to taste a much wider selection while more easily limiting alcohol intake to a heart-healthy amount.

(Wine Adventure Wine Advent Calendar 24 Half Bottles; $119.99, available online in CA only)

6. Terra Delyssa USDA Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oils

Lemon, red pepper, garlic, and rosemary-flavored olive oils would be a welcome, heart-healthy addition to any gourmet’s pantry. They’re ideal to enhance a fresh salad, for drizzling over soups, or to liven up some steamed broccoli rabe. It’s a great value, too: you get two separate packs of four bottles of oil for the price, making each gift less than $22 each.

(Terra Delyssa USDA Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oils; $42.99, 2 packs of 4 8.5oz bottles)

7. La Marca Prosecco

What could be more festive than a bottle of bubbly? This exuberant Italian prosecco is wildly popular for a reason: delicately citrusy, with green apple, a bit of toast, and a hint of sweetness in the finish, it is the quintessential party beverage. Despite the elegant Tiffany blue label, this sparkler doesn’t take itself too seriously; it’s a great holiday gift at a very attractive price.

(La Marca Prosecco; 750 ml, $12, unavailable online)

8. New English Teas Vintage Breakfast Tea Tin

If you bought this gift just for the beautiful blue tin, we wouldn’t blame you. However, this pretty tin is absolutely packed with 240 teabags full of antioxidant-rich black tea — an absolutely amazing value, considering the price. In fact, we saw this exact same tea tin is listed for $18 more at a similar store.

As a busy woman who gets too tired by the end of the day to attempt to cook dinner, I live off of easy-to-make meals. Trader Joe’s is one of my favorite grocery stores to shop at because of its variety of quick meals, including the ones in their freezer section. The stocked selection of frozen foods brings a great opportunity for various meals during the week. And because there’s such a wide selection, I never get bored of trying new things. An item I always shop for is some sort of Trader Joe’s frozen pasta. There are a ton of different ones to choose from; some I’d buy in bulk, others I’d leave back on the freezer shelf. Out of the six Trader Joe’s frozen pasta options I’ve had so far, there is one that I’ll definitely be buying over and over again.

5. Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese

Coming in last is the butternut squash mac and cheese. As someone whose personality trait is “autumn,” I was really hoping to like this one, thinking the squash would harmonize with the cheese for a flavorful taste.

However, after heating this up, I found the dish to be a little bland, with the sauce turning clumpy and dry as opposed to smooth and creamy. My expectations were not met, and I was left disappointed, unsatisfied, and hungry.

4. Fettuccine Alfredo

Heat this Trader Joe’s frozen pasta in a skillet, and it cooks into a creamy, rich dish. I could eat the whole bag in one sitting if I tried. However, the reason why it ranks lower than other kinds of pasta is that you need to inhale the fettuccine alfredo while it’s still hot. The minute it starts to cool down, the cheese congeals and clings onto the pasta, becoming very dry. Reheating doesn’t help, either, as the oil seeps into the bottom of the dish. Maybe just eat this straight out of the saute pan when it’s ready.

3. Cauliflower Gnocchi

For the longest time, it’s that I could not cook this Trader Joe’s frozen pasta properly. The bag the cauliflower gnocchi comes in says you can boil or microwave them, which I have tried both and do not recommend. The best option is to cook them on the stovetop. When I eventually got the hang of it, I would sauté the little pillows with butter and let the outside crisp up, creating a nice crunchy texture. Depending on how I’m feeling that day, I’ll eat them as is (they’re that good), or dress them up with some sauce. I’d say this is a good healthier alternative to other pasta.

2. Reduced Guilt Macaroni and Cheese

All the perks of a comfort dish, but with less of the “guilt.” I actually prefer this over many frozen mac and cheese dishes, and I take my mac and cheese very seriously! It’s simple to throw in the microwave. When it’s done, mix it around to get a cheesy and tasty macaroni and cheese entree (or side, but I eat the whole thing, no problem). The whole thing clocks in at 270 calories and 15 grams of protein. My only dilemma is that I’m disappointed when I finish it. To make it more filling, you can always throw a veggie or extra protein into the mix and it becomes even more satisfying.

1. Sweet Potato Gnocchi

The champion of the Trader Joe’s frozen pasta competition goes to the sweet potato gnocchi with butter and sage. This meal is easy to make; put a bit of water into the saucepan and cover it with a lid so the gnocchi can cook. The flavor from the sage and butter creates a sauce that I could scoop up with a spoon and eat on its own. It’s loaded with flavor, but not too strong where it takes away from the soft sweet potato. I am also very full after one serving, so this bag makes for a great meal at least twice in one busy week. And it’s going to be so good the first time you’ll be excited to eat it again the next day!

We appreciate that a no-hassle frozen dinner can be easily heated, just like everyone else. However, after reviewing the nutrition label of the popular frozen dinner options, we identified the healthiest options you can choose when you’re in a rush. We spoke with dietitians experts to pinpoint their recommendations on their healthiest favorite frozen dinner products.

How we chose these healthy frozen dinners

  • Empty calories: Frozen foods can rack up significant calories, especially if you’re not paying attention to the nutrition facts. Depending on the label, the product might contain unnecessary calories or oils, contributing to taking in empty calories — without boosting the nutrition value.
  • Saturated fat: Many frozen options are loaded with butter, cheese, and red meats — all high in saturated fat. Too much saturated fat may increase your risk for heart disease, so we considered saturated fat content was a key aspect of the nutrition label when evaluating the healthiness of these items.
  • Sodium: Given that salt is a preservative, it’s quite easy to exceed the recommended daily allowance for sodium in frozen foods. The daily recommendation is 2,300 mg or less, so check out your nutrition label in the freezer aisle for added salt.

Opting for convenient options like frozen dinners to simplify meal preparation is totally OK from time to time. Consider pairing your meal with a piece of fruit or veggies for additional volume, nutritional value, and a little more balance to the meal. Let’s take a look at the frozen dinners dietitians recommend you choose from the store.

1. Red’s Burritos

Amy Beney, MS, RD, CDCES, Owner of Nutrition Insights recommends Red’s products are simple to make, a great source of protein, and are easily microwaved for people on the go. These can be used for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

2. Cascadian Farm Organics Powered by Plants

Cascadian Farm Organics Powered by Plants sweet potato, farro, black bean, and spinach mix is a great meatless option, Raelyn Snyder, RD offers. This mix takes less than 10 minutes in a skillet and has 8 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein per serving. Adding an additional can of beans or some chopped chicken is also a great way to make this a balanced meal, she comments.

3. Trader Joe’s Vegan Thai Green Curry

“Sometimes, it can be tough to find a frozen meal that feels balanced without sacrificing on flavor. The vegan thai green curry does it easily. I love Trader Joe’s Vegan Thai Green Curry! It is so full of flavor and texture, it easily out-competes many meat-containing frozen meals,” says Tori Vasko, RD or Tori Vasko, RD owner of plant-based food blog Easy Chickpeasy. The serving size is satiating, and there are 7 grams of fiber that can keep you feeling full for hours, she adds.

4. Trader Joe’s Chicken Burrito Bowl

Trader Joe’s Chicken Burrito Bowl is a great frozen option when you need something quick, Alyssa Pacheco, RD tells us. “It’s not just a tasty option, either. On top of being delicious, it’s packed with 22 grams of protein and a whopping 9 grams of fiber that will keep you feeling full and satisfied,” she says.

5. Banza Pizza

Compared to frozen cauliflower pizza options, Banza pizzas pack in more protein and nearly double the fiber due to their plant-based, high-fiber crust. Great for a quick dinner that you can feel good about, pair this frozen pizza with some fruit or veggies on the side to increase the volume and balance of this meal.

6. Sweet Earth’s Frozen Pad Thai Bowls

When time is tight, Sweet Earth’s frozen pad thai bowls are my ultimate savior, comments Chelsea LeBlanc, RDN, LD, is a Nashville, TN based dietitian and owner of Chelsea LeBlanc Nutrition. “Packed with a generous 11 grams of plant-based protein, they’re a perfect choice for anyone aiming to add more plant-based goodness. To kick it up a notch, I toss in extra frozen peppers and edamame, creating a protein and veggie-packed lunch or dinner,” she says.

“As a pediatric dietitian and mom of three, frozen dinners have been a game-changer for me on busy nights when cooking just isn’t in the cards. I’m a big fan of Ipsa Provisions, which ships chef-crafted, nutrient-rich frozen meals, shares Malina Malkani, MS, RDN, CDN owner of Malina Malkani Nutrition and author of Safe and Simple Food Allergy Prevention.

From soups to main dishes to pasta and pizza, Ipsa is cooked in small batches with fresh, high-quality ingredients and reheats quickly in the oven or on the stovetop, allowing me to get a hot, nutritious meal on the table within minutes, Malkani says.

8. Trader Joe’s Cuban Style Citrus Garlic Bowl

Trader Joe’s Cuban Style Citrus Garlic Bowl is my go-to frozen meal when I don’t have time to meal prep or cook, Megan Huff, RD, LD tells us. It’s a flavorful yet balanced meal, this bowl contains plantains, bell peppers, yellow rice, chicken, and a tangy mojo sauce while packing in 16 grams of protein, Huff says.

Soup tends to take a backseat during the summer months when many of us prefer to eat fresher, and frankly, cooler meals. Now that a slight chill has started to grace the air, along with pumpkin spice everything, soup is ready to have its moment again. Thankfully, popular grocery stores like Trader Joe’s have many soups to choose from. But which ones would be considered the best nutritionally?

While soup can be comforting and nourishing, like all prepared foods it can also be a nutritional pitfall if left unchecked. Kimberly Gomer, MS, RD/LDN, director of nutrition for Body Beautiful Miami, talks us through other things she looks for in a balanced, nutritionally-rich soup.

How to look for the best soups at Trader Joe’s

It’s important to look at the ingredient list,” she says. “Are there any refined vegetable seed oils in the product such as soybean, corn, cottonseed, sunflower, peanut, sesame, or rice bran oil? These are a problem for everyone as they are highly processed and linked to an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, and arthritis. Oils that are optimal include avocado, coconut, and olive oil.”

Gomer also advises looking for fewer ingredients. “The fewer added chemicals and preservatives the better,” she says. “And avoid added sugars, if you are watching your blood sugar, which has many names including corn syrup, honey, dextrose, fructose, and basically anything that ends with ‘ose.'”

Prepared soup also tends to be high in sodium, yet Gomer points out that a higher amount of sodium once in a while doesn’t have to be too much of a concern. “Not everyone is sodium or salt sensitive,” she says. “Where it was once thought that everyone needs to avoid sodium, this is not always the case, and some people, especially those either working out or working in hot conditions, actually need to consume more sodium which is lost through sweat. Certainly eating one higher sodium food, like soup, can be offset by eating less the rest of the day.”

With those principles in mind, here are Gomer’s picks for the best Trader Joe’s soups.

1. Kettle Cooked Chicken Soup

trader joes kettle cooked chicken soup

Trader Joe’s Kettle Cooked Chicken Soup can be found in the refrigerated section, and starts with antibiotic-free chicken and includes a good dose of vegetables and fresh herbs.

“This is a great choice,” says Gomer. “The ingredients are all real and recognizable, with no added chemicals, preservatives, unhealthy seed oils, or added sugar. To make this even more of a meal I would add extra chicken and maybe some extra veggies for more satiety.”

2. Organic Lentil Vegetable Soup

trader joes organic lentil vegetable soup

Trader Joe’s Organic Lentil Vegetable Soup is actually a canned selection — look for it in the pantry section next to quarts of stocks and other shelf-stable soups.

“This is another great take on lentil soup, with a bonus of having all organic ingredients,” says Gomer. “Again, this soup gets props because we recognize every ingredient, without extra chemicals or preservatives.”

With a greater dose of lentils, this soup has a good amount of protein: 12 grams per serving, which is key for satiety. Gomer suggests adding ground turkey or chickpeas if that suits you, or even just eating a double portion for a larger, but still healthy meal.

3. Organic Split Pea Soup

trader joes organic split pea soup

While many split pea soups contain ham, which contributes additional fat and sodium, Trader Joe’s Organic Split Pea Soup is a vegetarian option that is actually an upgraded, gluten-free recipe from Trader Joe’s original take on split pea.

“I love this split pea soup with its organic ingredients,” she says. “Next to making it yourself, you can’t get a better option, with no added unhealthy oils or needless sugar. I would boost it by adding more veggies and more protein – either in the form of beans, lentils, or ground chicken or turkey to make this a really filling meal.”

4. Garden Vegetable Soup

trader joes garden vegetable soup

Trader Joe’s Garden Vegetable Soup comes from the pantry section and is offered in a pint-sized jar.

“This would be a good option for a lighter meal or a snack,” says Gomer, again highlighting the lack of unhealthy oils or added sugar. The ingredient list includes not only the usual suspects for a vegetable soup such as tomatoes, carrots, celery, and onions, but also includes red bell peppers, zucchini, sweet potatoes, kale, swiss chard, and spinach.

Because it has a light amount of protein and fiber, Gomer says this soup wouldn’t work well as a stand-alone meal. “[It’s] better as an awesome side to pair with a turkey wrap or veggie burger.”

5. Tomato Feta Soup

trader joes tomato feta soup

While generally avoiding those soups that are cream or cheese-based is the best course of action when it comes to making good soup choices (due to their high amount of saturated fat content), that doesn’t mean that cheese can’t occasionally have a presence, as with Trader Joe’s Tomato Feta Soup.

“Assuming a person is not lactose intolerant or sensitive to dairy, this soup is a great choice,” says Gomer. “I love that they use healthy olive oil and clean ingredients. I also appreciate that, unlike other tomato soups, they do not add extra sugar to balance the tomato acidity.”

6. Lentil Soup with Ancient Grains

Courtesy of Trader Joe’s

Again coming from the refrigerated section of Trader Joe’s, Gomer says this lentil soup is a winner.

“There are no added unhealthy oils — in fact, they’ve used olive oil,” she says. “There are no added sugars, only that which comes from the veggies and lentils.”

Plus, the ancient grains which are quinoa, amaranth, millet, and flax seeds provide a filling 8 grams of fiber per serving.

“To make this even more of a meal, add some diced chicken, or if you want to keep it vegetarian, you can add additional beans such as pinto,” she suggests.
